January 10, 2018: Toyota and Mazda announced that they have chosen Alabama as the location for a $1.6-billion joint-venture automotive assembly plant that will employ up to 4,000 people. The plant capacity will be 300,000 vehicles per year, and production is expected to start by 2021. Products will include the Toyota Corolla and a new Mazda crossover.

Alabama is home to vehicle assembly plants for Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota-Mazda (announced 2018) as well as an engine assembly plant for Toyota. They are joined by a growing list of automotive suppliers – Kamtek, Lear, ZF, Topre, Gestamp, Mando, Mobis, Flex-N-Gate, Fleetwood Metals, and North American Lighting, just to name a few.

  • Alabama automakers produced more than 1 million cars and light-trucks in 2016.
  • A total of 10 car and light truck models are currently produced in the state.

  • Alabama’s export dollars for vehicles and vehicle parts rose to $9 billion in 2016.
