Food production and beverage product industries employed over 34,000 workers, accounting for over 13 percent of manufacturing jobs. There are over 400 food production and beverage product establishments in Alabama.

Some of the largest of these firms include Tyson Foods, Zeigler, Wayne Farms, To Your Health Sprouted Flour Co., and Bonnie Plants.

Alabama has a strong agricultural base with 8.2 million acres of farm land in use.

Alabama Farm Center

Alabama Farm Center is being constructed in Clanton to enhance agriculture in the state. The Center includes a 5,000-seat air-conditioned arena, 150,000 square foot exhibition building, 400-stall horse barn, 400 recreational vehicle hookups and a variety of other barns and arenas.

International Fertilizer Development Center

The International Fertilizer Development Center (known as IFDC) is working to alleviate global hunger by introducing improved agricultural practices and fertilizer technologies to farmers and by linking farmers to markets. Headquartered in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, USA, the organization is leading important projects in more than 25 countries.

Growing a Brighter Future for America’s Agricultural Industry

The state’s 28 four-year colleges and universities and 24 two-year community and technical colleges are strategically located throughout the state AIDT, Alabama’s #1 incentive, provides a total workforce delivery system at no cost to qualified employers.

Alabama is home to some of the nation’s leading research and development for the agriculture industry, including Auburn University’s College of Agriculture and several Auburn centers and institutions helping to make Alabama’s food industry more productive and safe. They are the Aquaculture & Fisheries Business Institute, Food Systems Institute and the National Poultry Technology Center.

In addition, Alabama A&M’s Department of Food & Animal Sciences, and Tuskegee University’s Department of Food & Nutritional Sciences are leading R&D resources for the food industry.

Putting R&D Into Alabama Ag-Tech

In Alabama, leading institutions are working on solutions to some of the greatest global challenges in agriculture and food safety. Some examples include HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology’s Genome Sequencing Center is generating whole genome sequencing, assembly and analysis, and developing tools that help support agricultural sustainability. The International Fertilizer Development Center is helping millions of farmers in developing countries to increase and sustain food security and agricultural productivity. The Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station (consisting of 16 research centers across the state) and Auburn University’s College of Agriculture conduct research on a wide range of subjects related to agriculture, forestry, natural resources and the environment. These have lead to discoveries that benefit farmers, business owners, consumers, and more.
